How to Use Cyberduck with cPanel

Cyberduck is a popular FTP and SFTP client that allows you to upload, download, and manage files on your web hosting account from your computer. It is available for both Windows and macOS.

This guide explains how to connect Cyberduck to your cPanel hosting account and manage your website files.


Step 1: Download and Install Cyberduck

If you do not already have Cyberduck installed:

  1. Visit the official Cyberduck website.

  2. Download the version for Windows or macOS.

  3. Install the program following the on-screen instructions.

After installation, open Cyberduck.


Step 2: Gather Your FTP Login Details

Before connecting, you will need your FTP login information.

Typical connection details include:

  • Server / Host: yourdomain.com or your server hostname

  • Username: Your FTP account username or cPanel username

  • Password: Your FTP account password

  • Port: 21 (FTP) or 22 (SFTP)

You can find FTP accounts in cPanel → FTP Accounts.


Step 3: Open a New Connection in Cyberduck

  1. Open Cyberduck.

  2. Click Open Connection at the top of the window.

A connection settings window will appear.


Step 4: Enter Your Connection Settings

Fill in the following information:

Protocol

Choose one of the following:

  • FTP (File Transfer Protocol)

  • SFTP (SSH File Transfer Protocol) – recommended if available

Server

Enter your domain name or server hostname.

Example:

yourdomain.com

Port

  • 21 for FTP

  • 22 for SFTP

Username

Enter your FTP username or cPanel username.

Password

Enter your FTP password.


Step 5: Connect to Your Server

  1. Click Connect.

  2. If Cyberduck asks you to trust the server certificate, click Allow or Trust.

Once connected, you will see the file structure of your hosting account.


Step 6: Upload Website Files

To upload files to your server:

  1. Locate the file or folder on your computer.

  2. Drag and drop the file into the Cyberduck window.

Most website files should be uploaded to the:

public_html

folder.

Files in this directory will be accessible through your website.


Step 7: Download Files from the Server

To download files:

  1. Right-click the file or folder you want.

  2. Select Download.

  3. Choose where to save the file on your computer.


Tips for Using Cyberduck

  • Use SFTP (port 22) when available for improved security.

  • Upload website files to the public_html directory.

  • Avoid deleting system files unless you are sure they are not required.

  • Keep backups of important files before making major changes.


Troubleshooting Connection Issues

If Cyberduck cannot connect:

  • Verify your server hostname, username, and password.

  • Confirm the correct port number is being used.

  • Ensure your FTP account exists in cPanel.

  • Try using the server hostname instead of your domain name.
